Last week, I checked a few more of my 20 Tawny Owl nest boxes that I have set up in autumn 2009. Amazingly I found owls in three out of four controlled boxes. They were well visible in the hole with my binoculars. I guess they were watching me thoroughly too. Even though I have not controlled all 20 boxes yet, it seems that there is an owl in about every second box.

Now it will be exciting to see if the owls will be breeding in the boxes as well or if they use them for day sleepovers only.

Tawny Owl in southern Sweden in January 2010. The head is visible in the opening of the nest box. I have built and set up 20 Tawny Owl nest boxes in total and it seems that so far, there are Tawny Owls in about 50% of them.

It will be interesting to see if there will be any other owls in my other nest boxes as well. During the last 2 years, I have set up 98 Barn Owl boxes, 35 Pygmy Owl boxes and 18 Tengmalm’s Owl boxes in southern Sweden.
