This week I have been busy building and setting up Tawny Owl nest boxes here in southern Sweden. On Monday, I have placed ten of these wooden nest boxes in the scanian forests and ten more nest boxes are currently under construction.

To build the nest boxes, ask forest owners for permission and to carry the ladder for miles through the forests in order to put up the boxes is time consuming work. However it is nice to give back something to nature, especially if nature gives one so many great experiences.

In times when the economical interests of the modern forestry have turned real forests into “wood fields”, old trees with holes have become a scarce sight. Owls and other hole-breeding birds are therefore having a hard time to find safe places too raise their young. I hope that my nest boxes will help. Combining wildlife photography with wildlife conservation is and has always been an important goal of mine.
